SECOND QUARTER 2012 ACTIVITIES

QPL HOLDS 3^rd COLLECTION ACTIVITY; ENGAGES MAUBAN LGU

Quezon Power (Philippines) Ltd. Co. affirms its commitment to our campaign on proper recycling of used lead-acid batteries (ULABs) by holding its 3^rd ULAB collection activity last May 15, 2012.
The plant was able to return and donate 2.16 tons of ULABs. It has also engaged its LGU and an additional 190 kilos were donated.
A
round 7 households brought also their ULABs and these were sold at P26.35/kilo.
For its first batch of ULABs, the funds were able to support QPL Community Relations’ potable water system project for one of its adopted school, Cagsiay I Elementary School.

MAGSAYSAY TURNS OVER SECOND BATCH OF ULABS

Magsaysay Group of Companies, represented by its SHES Manager Wendell dela Cruz, recently turned over another batch of ULABs to the Motolite-PBSP Balik Baterya Program. The Group initially donated 620 kilos. The funds will be pooled to implement a schools assistance project in Tondo, Manila.

This is one of the Group’s corporate social responsibility projects that aim to promote proper disposal of hazardous wastes. With the funds generated, the Group also wants to contribute in improving access to quality basic education.

Hazards of ULABs

* Lead is toxic and used electrolytes contain dissolved lead.
* Sulfuric acid is corrosive and contaminates soil and water when spilled.
* Ingestion or inhalation may cause anemia, high blood pressure, kidney problems, infertility, miscarriage, and nervous system damage.
* Exposed children may suffer from neurological disorders like learning disabilities and short attention span.

Thus, it is imperative that we dispose our ULABs properly. Let's not dispose these to informal recylers and junk shops who do not have pollution control. The common practice of battery breaking can cause contaminationof our water and drainage systems such as canals, rivers, creeks and wells.
